It is the cheapest plug-in hybrid on the market, it has 258 CV and costs €26,780

Plug-in hybrids are an interesting transition alternative between the thermal vehicle and the 100% electric car. They are not cars without disadvantages, and they have easements, such as the need to charge them daily for their purchase to make sense. Still, they are an easy way to get a emission-free driving and the DGT ZERO label at an appraised cost. In this article we are going to talk about the cheapest plug-in hybrid on the market: it costs less than 27,000 euros, has 258 CV and is on sale.

The car in question is the MG EHS, the plug-in hybrid version of the MG HS. It is a medium SUV, measuring 4.57 meters in length. It competes directly with cars like the SEAT Tarraco, Peugeot 5008 or Toyota RAV4, but also with a Citroën C5 Aircross Hybrid. In its plug-in version, it has a combined 258 hp. This power is achieved by combining a 1.5 turbo gasoline engine, with 162 CV of power – the engine of the gasoline MG HS – with an electric motor of 122 CV of power. Both engines drive the front axle only.

There is no all-wheel drive version of the MG EHS, only front-wheel drive.

The MG EHS battery has 16.6 kWh of gross capacity, and allows the SUV a 100% electric autonomy of 52 km according to the WLTP cycle. It is an autonomy in the segment average, but below that of rivals such as the Toyota RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid. Battery can only be charged at 3.7 kW power max. It is a low power and it will take 4 and a half hours to fully charge. Although it only has two drive wheels, the MG EHS has good performance: its 480 Nm of combined torque and 258 hp allow it to do 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds.

Curiously, its gearbox is 10 relations: the internal combustion engine has six relations and the electric one, four – and both, logically, can work at the same time. The interior of the MG EHS is the same as that of the MG HS, and after testing it, we can say that the perceived quality is correct. However, cost savings are perceived and its direct rivals have greater packaging and higher quality of adjustments. The trunk of the MG EHS has a volume of 448 liters15 liters less than the trunk of the MG HS.

Like many plug-in hybrids, we can charge the battery while driving the vehicle, at the cost of consuming more fuel.

While the HS’s boot is below segment average, among its plug-in rivals the MG EHS has competitive volume. The version offered is a Comfort finish for access to the range, but its equipment is very extensive. In addition to synthetic leather seats, it has digital instrumentation and an infotainment system with a 10.1″ screen – compatible with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. It has dual-zone climate control, 17-inch wheels, rear parking camera and driving assistance such as Lane change warning, cross-traffic alert or surveillance of vehicles in neutral.

The price that MG publishes on its website for the EHS is only €26,780, and thanks to this, it becomes the cheapest plug-in hybrid on the market. First of all, that price includes a discount of 5,000 euros of the MOVES III Plan, with scrapping. Second, it refers to units in stock, in Comfort finish, and Dover White color. Third, we are required to finance the purchase of the vehicle, and does not include registration/pre-delivery expenses. The particular financing conditions will be made explicit at the brand’s dealers.

The MG EHS is guaranteed for 7 years or 150,000 km.

If you are interested in the EHS, you should hurry: the MG EHS offer is only valid until the end of the year, and compared to September, it has become more expensive by just under 500 euros. The MG EHS may not be as competitive a car as some of its rivals, but the reality is that no one offers more for less money right now. At the moment, the second cheapest plug-in hybrid on the market is the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV, whose price on offer is 10 euros less than 30,000 euros.
