New Volkswagen ID.7 Spy Shot Peels Off Funky Digital Camouflage

At this year’s CES, Volkswagen gave the first official look at its new ID.7 electric vehicle yesterday. The automaker doesn’t fully disclose it, but instead displays examples still covered in “digital camouflage”. The funky design distorts the ID. 7, but new spy shots capture EV away from warm and sunny Las Vegas, wearing a simple gray exterior and little camouflage.

The only blinkers we can see on this test vehicle are on the front. The grille looks like a sticker, the badges are closed, and the camouflage appears to extend all the way to the headlights. But that’s about it. Other EVs appear to be fully exposed, giving a clear view of large designs such as sedans.

Volkswagen didn’t reveal many details about the EV during its launch today. The automaker didn’t disclose dough size, power output, or price. However, VW does say that the model will travel around 435 miles (700 kilometers), but that’s according to the European WLTP cycle. We wish the model had a less official range in the US; however, VW CEO Thomas Schafer said that the ID.7 will expand “our electric model range into the high end segment.”

The new ID.7 will use Volkswagen Group’s modular electric drive matrix (MEB) platform and will be on the larger side. The EV measures 194.5 inches long with a wheelbase of 116.9 inches, which should translate to a spacious cabin for passengers, especially with the way automakers package EVs. Photos from the official launch show off the interior, showing off the new 15.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, augmented reality head-up display and sleek digital instrument cluster.

Volkswagen previewed the ID.7 earlier this year with the ID. The Aero concept and the two look very similar. However, the production version looks a bit more road-ready. We don’t know when it will go on sale, but a full debut is expected in the second quarter of 2023, with the EV likely arriving in the US for the 2024 model year. The automaker may also offer the ID.7 as a wagon, expanding its utility and cabin space, but one it may not make it to US showrooms.
