Next-Gen BMW X4 Canceled, But iX4 Planned: Report

It’s 2022 but the BMW lineup continues to grow with no sign of slowing down. Recent entries include the electric iX1 and China’s long-wheelbase X5, with XM to soon crown the X portfolio. According to a new report from a well-known company insider, there’s one model that could live on borrowed time. The X4, basically the X3 beaten with a coupe stick, may not live to see the next generation, at least not with the combustion engine.

BMWBLOG quote Bimmer’s post user inguldyn – who is known for fixing things about changing Munich’s future lineup – said the German brand’s project would not be in enough demand to warrant an ICE-powered model. Arrogantly labeled as the Sports Activity Coupe (SAC), the X4 already has a code name for its third generation, the G46, but it probably won’t be the case in the end.

While the CLAR-based X4 will be discontinued in the coming years, the same source reports that a pure electric iX4 is coming soon. Reported in BMW it is known as the NA7 and will enter production at the automaker’s new Debrecen plant in Hungary from November 2026. It will sit on the Neue Klasse platform with a Gen6 round battery that increases the range and charging speed by up to 30 percent compared to the existing one. prismatic cells.

This battery sounds very promising as BMW estimates its weight will be reduced by as much as 20 percent while production costs can be reduced by half. In addition, CO2 emissions associated with manufacturing processes are projected to fall by up to 60 percent. The next-generation battery pack is expected to retain 80 percent of its performance even after a decade of use.

As always with rumors from company insiders, take unconfirmed details with a dash of proverb. We’d be surprised if the petrol and diesel X4 would be retired given how people shopping in the luxury segment seem to have an insatiable thirst for all things crossover.

The G02 X4 has been around since 2018 and will likely remain in the lineup for at least a few years. There could be a gap between the demise of the ICE and the launch of the EV, which won’t be the case with the conventionally-styled X3 as it will get a next-generation model with a combustion engine and electric powertrain.
