Polestar 3, Volvo’s challenge to the premium discovers its best weapon

Polestar’s most ambitious model is already a reality today. With the launch of new Polestar 3, the Swedish firm related to Volvo consolidates its commitment to the premium market, discovering an electric SUV that aims to compete with cars such as the Tesla Model X, the BMW iX, the Audi e-tron or the Volvo EX90. It is the third model developed by Polestar, but at the same time its most advanced and differentiated car, being a totally new electric car that marks a before and after in Polestar.

On an aesthetic level, this Polestar 3 is closely related to the lines and features that were advanced by the Precept prototype in its day. We are before a large SUV whose measurements are 4,900 mm in length, 2,120 mm wide, 1,627 mm high and 2,985 mm wheelbase. It is also a car that enjoys a 211mm ground clearancewhich reinforces its crossover image and will allow it to leave the asphalt with greater guarantees. Its manufacture is carried out in China and the United States from the SPA2 platform, the same one that will give life to the new Volvo XC90 and EX90. Constructed entirely of steel, the weight ranges between 2,584 and 2,670 Kg, ensuring a 50:50 distribution between axles.

The Polestar 3 offers up to 517 CV of power, being able to reach 610 km of autonomy

Inside we find a sober and minimalist design that evolves what has already been seen in other models of the brand, especially highlighting the central multimedia system with 14.5″ touch screen. This multimedia system uses Android Automotive as software and the latest generation of Qualcomm processors for its operation (Snapdragon Cockpit Platform). Driving assistance is multiple and very advanced, being managed through the NVIDIA Drive system and being able to offer a autonomous driving level 3 thanks to a special package that will include, among other improvements, a LIDAR sensor.

In terms of space, the Polestar 3 has 5 seats inside, the arrival of a 7-seater version is not planned. The rear trunk has 484 liters, expandable to 1,411 liters if we lower the rear seats. At the front there is a small 32-litre boot, ideal for storing recharging cables.

At the time of its launch, the Polestar 3 will be available with a single technical configuration with a double electric motor – one on each axle – capable of developing 489 hp of maximum power and 840 Nm of maximum torque. This scheme can increase its performance if we install the Performance Pack by raising the figures to 517 hp and 910 Nm. With this configuration, the Polestar 3 is capable of doing the 0-100 km/h in 5 seconds (4.7 s in the Performance versions), reaching a top speed of 210 km/h.

The Polestar 3 battery has a usable capacity of 107 kWh (111 gross kWh), is manufactured by CATL and uses NCM chemistry. With this ability, the Polestar 3 homologates a WLTP autonomy of 610 kilometers, having recharging at powers of up to 11 kW in alternating current and up to 250 kW in direct current. The architecture employed by the electric propulsion system is 400 volts.

For the tuning of the chassis, Polestar wanted to reaffirm its commitment to driving dynamics, which is why it uses Brembo brakes with 4-piston fixed calipers on the front axle (400 mm discs) and a air suspension with adaptive dampers of ZF origin. This suspension is capable of modifying its behavior 500 times per second, being able to preselect modes by the driver to prioritize comfort or stability.

The marketing of the Polestar 3 is already underway through the brand’s website, with a price of 92,900 euros for the “Long Range Dual Motor” version and 99,500 euros for the version with Performance Pack. The first deliveries are planned for the fourth quarter of 2023.
