With the latest BBR goodies, the Toyota GR86 will be afraid of your Mazda MX-5

BBR is a British tuner specializing in the Mazda MX-5. The British have just introduced a new rotary compressor kit for the fourth generation of the Japanese roadster. Although the philosophy of the Mazda MX-5 was never to seek high power, if not to maintain a contained weight and pure driving dynamics… no one bitter a sweet. And the truth is that with the BBR Stage 2 kit, the Mazda MX-5 ND2 – that is, the ND update – we will be able to scare cars like the Toyota GR86.

The BBR kit consists of a centrifugal compressor and it is compatible both with the MX-5 ND2 equipped with the 2.0 Skyactiv-G engine with 184 hp – the best engine in the range, in case there was any doubt – and with the ND with the 160 hp version of said engine . The aspect of a centrifugal compressor is similar to that of a turbo, but it compresses air in a linear way as it is connected directly to the car’s crankshaft. The compressors, therefore, provide power throughout the engine’s rotational speed and proportionally to it.

The car’s electronics are overhauled and high-quality “plumbing” is included, plus an additional oil cooler.

Stage 1 includes all hardware for £3,895 sterling (€4,460) and for an additional £900 BBR will install it – you’ll need to bring your MX-5 to the UK. The older Stage 2 includes a new exhaust system with greater gas flow and also optionally includes a larger intercooler than the one supplied with Stage 1. Its cost is 5,395 pounds (6,180 euros) and its Installation costs an additional £1,100. But of course, the performance gain is very considerable with either of the two proposals.

Starting from a 2.0 Skyactiv-G with 184 hp, the Stage 1 brings power to the 228 hp, and the torque at 271 Nm. In the case of Stage 2, we are going to 253 hp and 298 Nm of torque. These figures reduce the 0 to 96 km / h to 5.3 and 5.1 seconds respectively, filing two seconds off the initial time. In addition, the engine has more torque at any speed without losing its sharp character. With respect to a Toyota GR86, we will have a car at least as powerful, in addition to maintaining a weight around 150 kilos lower.

In the gallery you can find photos of the kit, as well as detailed specifications of each package. And remember, it is a British company: if you want to bring a kit you will have to pay customs, and also, fight later with the homologation for the Spanish ITV.
