You no longer need a Hummer to make your car move like a crab (and much more)

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a very interesting electric car, but it is by no means comparable to the off-road titan that is the GMC Hummer EV. Perhaps their only similarity is that they are both electric vehicles and have four wheels. However, what if I told you that a Hyundai Ioniq 5 could move like a crab, just like the Hummer does? And what if I could rotate on itself and make impossible maneuvers? I would not be lying to you, because Hyundai has just presented a prototype capable of doing all that.

The idea behind Hyundai Mobis e-Corner system – Hyundai’s division specializing in innovation and autonomous driving – is to maximize the capabilities of a four-wheel drive system. The e-Corner system was presented for the first time at CES 2018, at CES 2021 it was presented in its almost finished version, and on this occasion, Hyundai already shows us a working prototype using an Ioniq 5 as a base. The end result is promising, based on the maneuvers that the vehicle is capable of.

Come and see:

The system could also be licensed to other manufacturers. It seems ideal for bulky vehicles, such as vans or trucks.

The system allows the car to move diagonally like the GMC Hummer EV does, but it also allows it to pivot on a point, turn on itself or move sideways. Think about the possibilities of this system when parking a car. Although its true potential is exploited in a future autonomous car, we hope that e-Corner will soon reach a production vehicle to test it. Now, the amount of hardware it requires is significant, it requires redesigning the suspension, it’s heavy… and it looks extremely expensive.
